Chapter 22

I sputter next to Lilly and Keeva, uncertain of my next move. It’s like catching a thief in the act of stealing but instead of running, the thief opens up a pleasant conversation with you while continuing to pack the stolen goods into her bag. “You’re drinking on duty and working traffic without a panel?” I’m incredulous. This has to be a prank on the new guy. I reach to my back pocket for my datapad to send Noah an emergency message. Damn it, it’s still at the booth.

Keeva laughs gently while unplugging the earbud cord from her datapad. She slides it toward me. “Use mine,” she offers helpfully. “You have a fifty-fifty chance of him answering this time of day.”

I lift her datapad off the bar top. I wanted to snatch it angrily and in dramatic fashion but she’s so damned affable that it’s becoming hard to root against her. As I swipe my way through her meager list of contacts, she straightens her vest. The top buttons are open and the tan valley between her breasts is distracting. Now that I’m closer to her, I can tell the vest is made from a faded fabric and matches well with her washed-out pants.

Noah Hall answers on the sixth ping. He’s much older than I expected, maybe mid-fifties. His short greying hair parts to the right and he has the leathery complexion of someone who’s lived under a brutal star. “Keeva, what is it?” His face screws into confusion. “Uh? Jake?”

I assume he recognizes me from my personnel file. “Noah, thanks for meeting me at the docking bay.” I’m still mad at being blown off. “I guess you’re busy in the cab since the controller who is supposed to be working is drunk at a bar.”

“Son of a bitch,” he curses loudly.

There we go. That’s more like it. He’s furious with her. I feel my posture relax a little. This place isn’t Crazyville after all. I spin the datapad toward Keeva with a victorious smile.

Over the speakers, I hear Noah. “Keeva, if you’re drinking the last of the whiskey, there will be blood. We agreed to split it.”

Keeva presents her beer mug in a mock salute to her datapad. “Relax, Noah. Cheers.” She drains her half-full mug in front of him.

What. The. Hell. I face the datapad back toward me and stare at Noah.

“Why would you do that to me, Jake?” He’s clearly relieved and he asks the question as if we’ve been friends for years. “Don’t give me a heart attack like that.”

I jerk a thumb toward Keeva. “She’s the one doing it.” Is he blind?

Past the datapad, Keeva has lifted her admittedly nice ass off the stool and is leaning her lissome form over the bar. She’s refilling her mug from the tap.

“Let me get that for you,” offers Lilly, moving back behind the bar.

“I got it, hon,” Keeva returns. Once she’s back on her stool with a fresh beer, she turns to me. “Noah meant the whiskey.
